Partial eclipse timings

6.16pm – The eclipse begins
The Moon starts to move across the Sun. At first, it will look like a small “bite” appearing at the edge.

6.45pm onwards – The change becomes much more noticeable
More of the Sun will be covered, and the quality of the light may begin to feel slightly unusual.

7.13pmMaximum eclipse
This is the key moment. From the Oxford area, the eclipse magnitude will be approximately 0.929, with around 91% of the Sun’s surface covered. It will not become completely dark, but the light should noticeably dim and the temperature may drop slightly.

8.06pm – The eclipse ends
The Moon will have moved completely away from the Sun. The entire event lasts approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Very important safety information

This is a partial eclipse at Wittenham Clumps, not a total eclipse. There is therefore no point at which it is safe to look directly at the Sun without proper protection.

Everyone must use genuine eclipse glasses marked:

ISO 12312-2 or ISO 12312-2:2015

Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient, and eclipse glasses must not be used through binoculars, cameras or telescopes. Those devices require their own specialist solar filters fitted to the front. Cloud cover does not make direct viewing safe.
