Description:

Host: Sandra Regan

People often ask โ€œWhat is the Alexander Technique?โ€ Weโ€™ll begin to explore this in our 2 hour Workshop.

Another question people ask is โ€œWhy study the Alexander Technique?โ€
Again, weโ€™ll begin to explore some of the reasons why you might choose to in our workshop. Perhaps, like Sandra, youโ€™d prefer to live life with less muscular tension and experience a greater sense of freedom in all you do on a continually improving basis. Or perhaps youโ€™re interested in experiencing more ease in a particular activity such as walking, speaking, acting, playing an instrument, singing, playing sport โ€“ the list is endless! Maybe you have other reasons to choose to engage with the seeds of change that the Interactive Teaching Method (ITM) approach to Mr. Alexanderโ€™s work offers.
In this two-hour workshop you will be introduced to the stories of FM Alexander and ITM founder Don Weed. Some core ideas will be offered to you, for you to engage with if you choose. There will be the opportunity for some practical experiences on a one-to-one basis, within the context of a whole group experience.
Sandra trained with the ITM of Alexander Technique, graduating in 2019, and is currently the Executive Head of the ITM Teachersโ€™ Association. She teaches at the ITM UK Summer Workshop in Cirencester each August, and is a member of the Wessex Alexander Technique collective.
Here are a few quotes from Mr. Alexander and one of his students to give you a flavour:
โ€œToday man walks, talks, sits, stands, performsโ€ฆthe innumerable mechanical acts of daily life without giving a thought to the psychical and physical processes involvedโ€ฆโ€ [F. Matthias Alexander, Mansโ€™ Supreme Inheritance first published 1910 (Mouritz, Sixth Edition 1996, reprinted with minor corrections December 2002 (p7)]
ย โ€œโ€ฆthe Alexander Technique doesnโ€™t teach you something new to do. It teaches you how to bring more practical intelligence into what you are already doingโ€ฆโ€ [Frank Pierce Jones, Freedom to Change, first published in 1976 (Mouritz, Third Edition, 1997, reprinted March 2003, p2)]
The late Mr Joseph Rowntree after one of his lessons described my work as โ€˜reasoning from the known to the unknownโ€ฆโ€™โ€ [FM Alexander, The Use of the Self, first published in 1932 (Gollancz 1985, reissued by Orion Books in 2001, p85)]
Sandra says:
โ€œOf the (many) different wellness-related approaches I have tried or studied in my life, AT is the most self-responsible work I have found, with the greatest potential for continuing, lasting, change and improvement in all I do. Iโ€™m excited to be able to share some of my learning with you!โ€
